The City of Olathe is rolling out a revised approach to snow removal for the 2009-10 snow season. The revised approach is designed to maintain road safety during these events and allows for less material (sand/salt) use.  The revised snow plowing approach runs more trucks during the day and uses the sun to our advantage.  As a result, Olathe Residents are encouraged to park their vehicles in drives and clear sidewalks in front of their property.

The City has three response levels that vary with each snow event based on the amount of snow on the ground.

  • Level One – Snow reaches a depth of two inches (2") with additional accumulation expected. This effort will clear and maintain arterial and collector routes. Once arterial streets are controlled, treatment will extend to business and commercial collector roads.

  • Level Two – Snow reaches a depth of four (4”) inches. Cul-de-sac drivers will begin their plowing operations with smaller trucks (pickups and SUV’s). These vehicles will support the level one response until the storm is under control and then will proceed to their cul-de-sac routes.

  • Level Three – Snow reaches a depth of six inches (6") with additional accumulation expected.  At this time all qualified city employee operators will be used in snow removal efforts on a rotating twelve (12) hour basis.

Olathe remains committed to the safety of motorists and pedestrians, emergency response needs, and economic activity. This revised approach will in no way compromise that commitment.
