Check out the upcoming 2010 events, www.olatheks.org/Mahaffie/Events to plan your spring and summer. Events include Family Thursday nights in June and July (FREE Admission!) plus our 19th Century Fireworks Celebration July 1. Our season kicks off with Spring Plowin' and Plantin' April 10 and continues through November. Hopefully, our crops will look as good as they did in 2009.
What is there to see and do in January, February and March?
Explore the exhibits in the new Heritage Center. I Knew it was a Fine Country tells the stories of the Mahaffie family, early Olathe and Johnson County, the western trails and stagecoach travel. The exhibit includes a 12 minute film offering more of the site's history.
The video Border War Voices allows visitors to learn about what settlers went through during the Border War era. The video was co-produced by Wide Awake Films and generously funded through the Kansas Humanities Council. Visit Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop Saturday February 27 for our Winter on the Farm Event. Winter on the Farm will be from 10am-4pm and activities may include soap making, sausage making and stagecoach or sleigh rides depending on weather and ground conditions. Regular admission applies of $6/adult, $4/child ages 5-11, under 4 FREE. (Olathe residents receive $1/off admission with proof of residency).
We began the Spring Wheat Harvest on July 16. A special thanks to all visitors who helped us out! Check out more photographs on Mahaffie's Facebook page and the video from the Kansas City Star. For more information call 913.971.5111 or email: mahaffie@olatheks.org

Here are some photos of our crops taken on July 8, 2009. Come explore Mahaffie in the Spring and Summer to see how our farm will grow!

The corn field will be Bloody Butcher, a 19th Century field corn. Our garden will have 19th Century Heirloom vegetables.

Come help our garden and fields grow! Help water, weed, and as the season goes on, help harvest the bounty! All crops and produce will be used in our 19th Century foodways program. When you explore the cellar of the 1865 Mahaffie home, the person cooking on the cookstove will be using what is grown in the garden and fields. When the food is not being used for those programs, we will be preserving the extra, just like the Mahaffie family would have done! Happy Farming!
